SHILLONG, Nov 5: The long-awaited Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building is likely to be ready by June 2026, Speaker Thomas A Sangma announced on Wednesday during a high-level review meeting attended by Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Parliamentary Affairs, Prestone Tynsong.
Originally slated for completion by March 2025, the project has been granted a six-month extension after vendors sought additional time to finish key interior works, including the main hall, reception area, and lobby.
To maintain momentum and ensure adherence to the new timeline, the Speaker has directed that monthly review meetings be held. The next review has been scheduled for December 8, 2025.
Sangma expressed confidence that the Autumn Session of 2026 will be conducted in the new building, which is being equipped with state-of-the-art audio-visual systems, improved acoustics, and enhanced security installations.
A major engineering highlight of the project is the redesigned dome, now structurally optimized to evenly distribute roof load. The new design has been vetted and approved by experts from IIT Guwahati and IIT Roorkee.
The Assembly complex is being developed in phases. Detailed DPRs for Phase-II, which will include staff quarters and other essential facilities, are currently being drawn up. The state government has also reached out to the concerned Central Ministries for the required approvals.
