Shillong, Nov 22: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Muster Roll workers, formed by members of the All Jaiñtia Muster Roll Workers’ Unions and other allied groups, has appealed to the Meghalaya Government for constructive engagement on their long-pending demands that directly impact the welfare and livelihood of thousands of workers across the state.
During a meeting held at Madan Malki, representatives from various unions resolved to work collectively and present their concerns through a unified platform. The JAC emphasized that their demands are not confrontational but aimed at ensuring fairness, clarity, and security for workers who have served for years under challenging conditions.
According to JAC spokesperson Ma Khroo Pariat, workers continue to face issues such as low wages, delayed payments, lack of clarity on regularization, and the absence of essential welfare measures including PF, insurance, and other social security benefits. He added that despite multiple submissions made in the past, official responses have been slow, leaving workers uncertain about their future.
Key Demands of the JAC
Clear policy and immediate regularization of Muster Roll workers.
Revision of wages in line with the pending Pay Commission report.
Strengthening of worker welfare schemes and social security coverage.
Timely engagement and response from the government to union submissions.
Immediate attention to the longstanding grievances affecting workers statewide.
The JAC has set December 10 as the deadline for the government to respond. While the committee hopes for a positive outcome through dialogue, it has also signaled that it may escalate its agitation if the issues continue to be overlooked, including a peaceful “Christmas Vigil” at the Secretariat.
Pariat emphasized that the JAC remains committed to cooperation and constructive discussion, noting that the aim is not confrontation but securing dignity, stability, and a better future for the workforce.
The meeting concluded with optimism that a unified approach will encourage the government to take meaningful action in the interest of the workers and the overall development of the state.
