SHILLONG, DEC 5: The scenic village of Mawkynrew witnessed a massive turnout as thousands of visitors from across Meghalaya and neighbouring regions flocked to the annual Sohphlang Festival, celebrating one of the state’s most beloved winter delicacies.
The festival, which has grown into a major cultural and tourism attraction, showcased sohphlang—a seasonal tuber widely enjoyed during winter—alongside the traditional farming practices that local growers have safeguarded for generations.

Stalls run by farmers and self-help groups remained packed throughout the day, with visitors eagerly lining up to taste freshly harvested sohphlang served with powdered chilli, salt, and other traditional accompaniments. Many tourists praised the event for providing an authentic glimpse into Khasi rural life.
Organisers stressed that the festival plays an important role in supporting farmers, enhancing rural livelihoods, and promoting agro-tourism. “This festival keeps our farming heritage alive while giving farmers the recognition and income they deserve,” said one of the organisers.
Featuring cultural performances, traditional exhibitions and a vibrant marketplace, the event once again reinforced Mawkynrew’s status as a key centre of Khasi culture and seasonal agriculture.
