SHILLONG, Jan 15: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday underscored the need for unity and consensus on the proposed railway project in the Khasi-Jaintia region, stating that the government will move forward only after consulting all stakeholders and bringing everyone on board.
“We are very clear that we are going to move forward only when we are able to consult and get everybody on board,” Sangma said, while expressing disappointment over the poor attendance of political parties at the recently convened all-party meeting on the issue.
The chief minister urged opposition parties to actively participate in discussions, stressing that dialogue is essential to resolving differences. “Whether we agree or disagree, until we talk, we are not going to reach anywhere,” he remarked.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to inclusive engagement, Sangma said efforts would continue to explain the economic benefits of the railway project while addressing public concerns. “We will continue to explain the benefits and try to address the concerns people may have, and see if we can arrive at a meeting point, following which we will be able to take the matter to Delhi,” he added.
While emphasizing the economic importance of the railway project, Sangma acknowledged that the issue is sensitive and requires careful and balanced consideration.
The Meghalaya government had earlier constituted an all-party committee to deliberate on the proposed railway project, but several political parties chose not to participate in the process.
