SHILLONG, MAR 5: United Democratic Party (UDP) legislator Paul Lyngdoh sidestepped questions regarding possible leadership changes within the party, saying that analysing internal political developments should be left to journalists.
Speaking to reporters, the West Shillong MLA declined to directly comment on whether there are moves within the party to change its leadership.
“See, I think it is entirely the job of journalists as opinion makers to also find out and analyse political events. I can’t really comment politically on the party to which I belong and say things,” Lyngdoh said.
When pressed further, he maintained his cautious stance.
“If I say everything is alright, you will say this guy is bragging about UDP. If I say everything is wrong, you will say he is criticising his own party. Why don’t you analyse these events?” he added.
Lyngdoh, however, reiterated his earlier call for strengthening democratic practices within the party.
“I have already spoken about the need to democratise the party. That is on record and it continues to be my stand,” he said.
When asked whether this meant the UDP lacked internal democracy, Lyngdoh declined to elaborate further, urging reporters to refer to his previous remarks.
“You please go back to my earlier statement—why I made that statement and what is the status as of date if you are to analyse that statement,” he said.
Lyngdoh represents the West Shillong constituency in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
