Shillong, March 20: Renowned wood craftsman and sculptor Gilford Pde from Chiliangraj, Jowai, recently showcased his work at the 39th Exhibition held at All Saints Cathedral, highlighting the depth of traditional artistry from Meghalaya.

The exhibition was organised by the District Commerce and Industries Centre (DCIC) as part of its initiative to promote local artisans and preserve indigenous craftsmanship.

Representing his enterprise “Gilford Pde Arts,” Pde presented an array of intricately carved wooden artworks inspired by the rich cultural heritage of the Khasi and Pnar communities. His creations drew widespread appreciation for their detail, creativity, and cultural storytelling.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Pde emphasised that recognition should be a by-product of mastery rather than a pursuit in itself. “Fame should follow knowledge and skill, not be chased for its own sake,” he said.

He expressed gratitude for platforms like the DCIC exhibition, noting that such opportunities motivate artisans to showcase their talents and connect with wider markets. He also acknowledged the role of government support in helping local artists grow and sustain their craft.

Pde shared that his journey began in his village, where his talent was first nurtured before progressing to district-level platforms. With support from DCIC Jowai, he gained certifications and eventually national recognition, including receiving a National Award.

Highlighting the essence of his work, he said wood carving goes beyond craftsmanship and serves as a medium of storytelling, drawing from folklore and traditional scripts. He also mentors young artisans, passing on his skills to the next generation.

The exhibition provided a significant platform for artisans across the state to display their work, while contributing to livelihood opportunities and the promotion of Meghalaya’s traditional arts.
