Shillong, April 9: Following an ultimatum issued by Muster Roll workers’ unions demanding regular and timely payment of wages, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has initiated talks to address their concerns.
After a meeting with government representatives, adviser to the All Meghalaya Muster Roll Workers’ Unions, Ma Khroo L. Pariat, informed that the unions have decided to temporarily suspend their agitation. This comes after assurances from the Chief Minister that the government would take their demands seriously and work towards resolving the issues.
Pariat stated that the unions highlighted several pressing concerns, including delays in salary disbursement, non-implementation of official government orders by various departments, and a lack of clarity in service rules governing Muster Roll workers.
He further pointed out that despite directives issued earlier, many departments have failed to comply, resulting in confusion and dissatisfaction among workers. Concerns were also raised over the implementation of minimum wages, with unions alleging discrepancies and irregularities in wage payments.
Another key issue discussed was the retirement policy for Muster Roll workers. While certain provisions exist, their implementation remains unclear, leaving many workers uncertain about their future security.
Responding to these concerns, the Chief Minister acknowledged lapses in the functioning of some government departments and assured that corrective measures would be taken. He also announced that a meeting with senior officials and heads of departments would be convened shortly to ensure proper enforcement of government directives.
The unions, however, have cautioned that if the government fails to act on its assurances within April, they will be forced to resume a more intensified agitation.
