Shillong, Apr 14: The much-anticipated fifth edition of the Meghalaya State League (MSL 5) will get underway on Wednesday evening, with Nongkseh SSCC taking on Khimusniang SC in the opening fixture.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 5 PM under floodlights at the SSA Stadium, with tickets available at the venue. A large turnout of passionate supporters and football enthusiasts is expected for the Group A clash.
The Honourable Sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Wailadmiki Shylla, will grace the occasion as the chief guest.
Nongkseh enter the tournament in formidable form, having enjoyed a remarkable 2025 season. The club clinched the First Division title and Champions Cup under the Shillong Sports Association, and further added to their accolades by winning the prestigious Sikkim Gold Cup earlier this year.
Their opponents, Khimusniang, will be equally determined to make a strong start after lifting the U Kiang Nangbah Memorial Trophy by winning the West Jaintia District Sports Association’s Super Division 2025. They will aim to emulate the success of Niaw Wasa United, who won the inaugural MSL title in 2017-18.
Interestingly, both Nongkseh and Khimusniang will be making their debut appearances in the MSL, the flagship football competition organised by the Meghalaya Football Association with full support from the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.
Since its inception, the league has significantly elevated the standard of football across the state. Notably, each of the previous four editions has produced a different champion — Niaw Wasa United (2017-18), Shillong Lajong FC (2019), Rangdajied United FC (2023), and Mawlai SC (2024-25).
While Shillong-based teams have dominated in recent editions, clubs from other districts have also made their mark, underlining the growing competitiveness and reach of football across Meghalaya.
