Shillong, Apr 14: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has ruled out talks with activists from the Green Tech Foundation (GTF) over their protest against the alleged proposed Taj Umiam Resort & Spa on Lumpongdeng Island, stating that their concerns have already been addressed.

“The construction is going to take place in the current location where the Orchid Barapani is there, and the island’s ecosystem and environment will be maintained,” Sangma said.

He emphasized that no permanent construction will be allowed on the island, and only temporary, eco-friendly structures will be built for specific events.

Sangma expressed disappointment that the GTF is not satisfied with the government’s assurances, saying “it’s unfortunate that they are not satisfied because that is the fact of the matter.”

Asked if the government would invite the protesters for talks, the chief minister said, “Their concern was that the entire hotel is going to be made out there… I have made it clear that there is no such intention, there is no building that is going to be constructed there, the island will remain as it is. So, the matter is quite clear, so I don’t see any confusion in that,” Sangma said.

Regarding allegations of tree felling, Sangma attributed the incident to individuals, stating that the company involved in the project was not responsible.

“The police have clarified that there were individuals involved, not the company… it’s nothing to do with the project,” he said, urging citizens to be assured that there will be no damage to the island.

He urged the protesters to cooperate, stating that the project aims to boost tourism in the state.

The GTF has been on an indefinite hunger strike since April 8, demanding the withdrawal of the project, citing environmental concerns.

The foundation’s chairman, H Bansiewdor Nonglang, has vowed to continue the protest until the government provides written assurance that the project will be scrapped.
