Shillong, June 13: Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, Revati Mohite Dere, on Saturday urged students who excelled in the SSLC and HSSLC examinations to continue striving for excellence with hard work, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility.
She was addressing a felicitation programme organised by University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) at the State Convention Centre, where 86 meritorious students of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) were honoured for their outstanding academic achievements.
Among the awardees were 56 SSLC toppers and 36 HSSLC toppers, who received certificates and cash awards in recognition of their performance in the board examinations.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque and Managing Director of The Shillong Times, Manas Chaudhuri.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Justice Dere congratulated the students on their remarkable achievements and commended USTM for recognising and encouraging academic excellence.
“It is a privilege and an honour to be here today. My heartfelt congratulations to all the toppers of Class X and Class XII in Meghalaya. You have truly done remarkably well,” she said.
The Chief Justice emphasised that the success of the students was not theirs alone but also belonged to their parents, teachers, and schools, who had supported and guided them throughout their educational journey.
“When we honour these students, we also honour the parents who have sacrificed for their children’s future and the teachers who have served as mentors and guides in their success,” she said.
Observing the determination and ambition reflected in the students, Justice Dere remarked that the future of the country is shaped in educational institutions.
“The future of the nation is built in classrooms, not in secretariats,” she said.
She reminded the students that excelling in examinations marks only the beginning of a much longer journey.
“Your achievement today is only the starting point. Excellence is not a destination; it is a responsibility. The real journey of life begins now,” she said.
Stressing the importance of values, Justice Dere said academic scores may create opportunities, but character is the true foundation of lasting success.
“Marks may open doors, but character is what builds your reputation and earns respect throughout life,” she said.
She further noted that excellence is measured not merely by high scores but by perseverance, compassion, hard work, and a willingness to help others.
“You have not succeeded by chance. You have risen because you chose discipline, commitment, and integrity over distractions and shortcuts,” she told the students.
The Chief Justice also urged the toppers to never forget the sacrifices made by their parents and teachers.
“Behind every child who believes in themselves, there are parents who believed in them first. Teachers are the true nation-builders,” she said.
In her concluding remarks, Justice Dere encouraged the students to become role models and contribute meaningfully to society.
“There are many young people who have not had the opportunities that you have received. Be an inspiration to them. Use your success responsibly and always remain grateful to those who helped you along this journey,” she said.
Earlier, USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque highlighted the university’s scholarship schemes and academic programmes aimed at supporting meritorious students from Meghalaya and promoting quality education across the state.
