Shillong, June 14: Thousands of Catholic faithful from across the Archdiocese of Shillong gathered at the Sacred Heart Shrine on Sunday for the Annual Pilgrimage in honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a cherished tradition that continues to inspire devotion, prayer, and spiritual renewal.

The pilgrimage traces its origins to 1934, when Constantine Vendrame first led devotees from St. Joseph’s Church to the Sacred Heart Shrine at Phudmuri, Mawlai. Since then, the annual event has been observed during the weeks following the Feast of Corpus Christi, drawing pilgrims from across the region.

This year’s celebration witnessed the participation of thousands of devotees who joined in Eucharistic Adoration, Holy Mass, and the traditional procession from Mawkhar to Mawlai. The Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Archbishop of Shillong, Victor Lyngdoh, who also led the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

Delivering the spiritual reflection, Raphael Maiong emphasised that the Sacred Heart of Jesus represents the deepest expression of God’s unconditional love for humanity.

“The Sacred Heart of Jesus is not merely a symbol or image. It is a living message that reveals God’s infinite love, mercy, and compassion for every person despite human weaknesses, sins, and failures,” he said.

Fr. Raphael explained that through the Sacred Heart, Jesus continues to invite people to experience His mercy and forgiveness and to return to Him with faith and trust. He noted that in a world marked by uncertainty, suffering, and anxiety, devotion to the Sacred Heart offers hope and reassurance that God never abandons His people.

Highlighting contemporary challenges faced by families and society, he said many individuals today struggle with loneliness, emotional distress, broken relationships, and a loss of spiritual direction. In such circumstances, he said, the Sacred Heart serves as a source of strength, healing, and renewed hope.

He further urged Christians to translate their faith into concrete acts of love and service, stressing that genuine discipleship is reflected in compassion towards others, forgiveness, and care for the poor and marginalised.

Fr. Raphael also underscored the importance of family prayer, describing it as a vital foundation for maintaining unity, peace, and mutual understanding within households. He encouraged families to entrust themselves to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to cultivate a spirit of prayer in their daily lives.

Concluding his message, he called on the faithful to become ambassadors of Christ’s love in their communities, parishes, and society at large.

“By following the example of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Christians can become instruments of peace, hope, and love in a world that is in great need of God’s presence,” he said.

The annual pilgrimage brought together devotees from various parishes, religious congregations, and prayer groups, fostering a spirit of unity and devotion centred on the love and mercy of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
