SHILLONG, JUN 22: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also holds the PWD (Roads) portfolio, said on Monday that restoration of the Shillong-Dawki road will take considerable time after a major landslide completely cut off traffic at Chainage 25+200 near Laitlyngkot village.

Tynsong inspected the landslide site with a team comprising the District Administration, NHIDCL, PWD (Roads), Disaster Management officials and the road construction companies.

“The damage is very severe and it will also take a long time to repair this,” Tynsong said after reviewing the site.

He noted that the team assessed both the scale of the damage and options for restoring connectivity.

With the highway blocked, the Deputy CM said the immediate priority is a temporary arrangement for commuters.

“We also came to see if there is any temporary arrangement, how to allow traffic to pass, or if vehicles can go from Dawki and Pynursla to Shillong,” he stated.

A final call will follow a meeting at the Inspection Bungalow.

Based on the inspection, Tynsong indicated that a diversion for light vehicles may be opened via Umthli, Iew Mawiong and Nonthymmai, exiting near Bah Khrik’s side.

“It seems we will have to route traffic via Umthli, via Iew Mawiong and also via Nonthymmai to exit at Bah Khrik’s side. We have travelled a bit and I see that it is possible, temporarily, but only for light vehicles. It cannot be for commercial vehicles,” he said.

Tynsong said all agencies will coordinate on execution. “We will sit down with all the officers, from the District Administration, NHIDCL, PWD to decide how to carry out this work,” he said.

He added that village authorities and landowners will be approached for cooperation, since the temporary route will use local roads until the new highway construction is completed.

“We will also coordinate with the village authorities and landowners and request them to allow us to use the road until the construction of this new road is completed, especially since the road has been completely cut off,” Tynsong said.
