Nongpoh, July 22: Demonstrating the spirit of compassion and community service, National People’s Party (NPP) Youth Wing State Secretary Pyndaplang Wahlang on Tuesday extended relief assistance to more than 40 families affected by the recent flash floods in Umling village, Ri Bhoi district.

The floods, triggered by heavy rainfall on July 20, inundated roads and homes, damaging household belongings, washing away livestock and other property, and leaving many families in distress, particularly those living in vulnerable houses.

Moved by the plight of the affected residents, Wahlang conducted an assessment to identify the worst-hit and most needy families. With the support of local youth volunteers, he visited the affected households and personally financed relief materials from his own pocket for distribution.

The relief distribution programme was held at the Umling Dorbar Hall in the presence of Umling Rangbah Shnong Bah Comenson Wahlang.

Speaking on the occasion, the Rangbah Shnong expressed gratitude to Pyndaplang Wahlang for his humanitarian gesture. He said the village was fortunate to have dedicated young leaders who stand by the community during difficult times.

He also appreciated the quality of the relief materials distributed, noting that the blankets, bedding and other essential items were of good standard and not merely symbolic assistance.

Addressing the gathering, Pyndaplang Wahlang said that neighbours and community members should always be willing to help one another, especially when they are blessed with the means to do so.

He also stressed the importance of instilling the values of compassion and mutual support in the younger generation, saying such values are essential to preserving a caring society and ensuring the progress and unity of the community.
