Shillong, Aug 29: A remote Huroi village along the Indo-Bangla border in East Jaintia Hills district with around 800 electorates has decided to boycott the upcoming state Assembly election as a mark of protest against the State government that neglected development in the area.

Residents of the village adopted the resolution during a meeting convened by an executive committee of Dorbar Shnong Huroi where they discussed various problems faced by the people.

On August 28, a memorandum in this regard was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District, who is also the district election officer .

Secretary of Huroi village, Poly Pohlong said that the village was neglected by the government and elected representatives and betrayed the people by not fulfilling promises made during election.

“People are used only during election. Elected representatives like MP, MLA, and MDC disappeared after the election. The whole villagers and village elders are tired of this attitude of the government towards the people in rural area,” Pohlong said.

The village has been demanding immediate repair of the Sonapur-Borkhat road by the PWD (roads), approval from the NEC to start the construction of Rymbai-Borkhat-Jalapur road project within this year, and upgradation of Huroi sub-centre to a Primary Health Centre.

At present the nearest PHC is in Umkiang village which is 60 kms away from Huroi village.
