SHILLONG, AUG 31: The three Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) leaders arrested in connection with the August 19 violence were produced before the court again on Monday after additional sections were invoked against them.

The leaders — president Raymond Kharjana, general secretary Reuben Najiar and vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet — are currently in 14-day judicial custody for their alleged role in the violence during the KSU’s black flag bike rally that saw two vehicles torched, 31 vandalized and 18 persons assaulted.

After the hearing, Kharjana said attempts to target KSU leaders during agitations were not new.

“Jail is a place that strengthens and ignites the spirit of the struggle for the greater cause of the land and the community,” he said.

Echoing him, Najiar said, “They can implicate us now. This is their time, we will answer when we come out of jail.”
