SHILLONG, SEPT 7: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has strengthened its presence in West Jaintia Hills with the formation of a new unit at Mynkrem village under Laskein Circle.
The new unit – KSU Mynkrem Unit – was formally constituted on September 7 in a meeting presided over by KSU West Jaintia Hills District General Secretary Leningrad Tariang.
KSU CEC Environment Secretary Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew administered the oath to the new office bearers and urged them to work in close coordination with the dorbar shnong for the overall development of the village.
Clarifying the Union’s stand on agitations, Kharbihkhiew said KSU does not oppose the government for the sake of opposing.
“We do not oppose any government that brings development in collaboration with the locality. We oppose only when the government tramples upon people’s rights and disturbs peace,” he said.
He also called upon the youth to refrain from early marriage and focus on securing livelihoods first, stating that early marriage is detrimental to the state and the community.
KSU CEC Information & Publicity Secretary Pynshai Kupar Dkhar, in his address, motivated the new members to be proactive members of society.
“There are three kinds of people – those who watch what happens, those who make things happen, and the majority who don’t know what happens. The new unit should strive to be among those who both observe and act to bring positive change,” he said.
Other leaders who spoke included KSU West Jaintia Hills President Laitphar Syngkrem, KSU East Jaintia Hills Finance Secretary Shaniahskhem Dkhar, KSU Jowai Circle General Secretary Nipoi Shadap and the headman of Mynkrem village.
