SHILLONG, SEPT 8: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said every programme and every penny spent by the government is an investment in the future of the state – its youth.
He was speaking after felicitating 46 outstanding sportspersons and presenting the ‘Achiever of the Month’ award in the Sports Edition to footballer Sanfida Nongrum.“
The objective of Achiever of the Month is to recognise achievements in different fields, to support, understand, motivate and appreciate efforts,” the Chief Minister said.
Stating that sports is a priority sector, Sangma said the government has significantly increased budgetary allocation and investments in sports infrastructure and in supporting associations, coaches and athletes.
“A few years back, the sports sector was facing challenges. Sports associations were carrying on activities out of love and passion with little or no support from the government. We have been able to address and streamline some of those challenges,” he said.
He said the state’s Sports Policy is not just a policy document but a vision document that guides the government to achieve its goals.
Congratulating the awardees, the Chief Minister said sports goes beyond winning medals.
“Sports is a way of life and your journey does not end here. I encourage you to lead by example,” he said.
Sangma also interacted with athletes, coaches and representatives and responded to queries on support for participation in national and international tournaments and incentives for medal winners.
