Shillong, Sept 20: The Assembly’s Committee on Public Sector Undertakings on Wednesday said the performances of the different public sector undertakings is not worth praising as the state government has incurred a revenue loss of nearly Rs 400 crore.

The functioning of the PSUs was also reviewed by the Committee headed by Congress veteran leader and former chief minister Salseng C Marak who have summoned all their heads to a meeting held here on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Committee member Titosstarwell Chyne said that the committee has found out from the report of the Comptroller and Audit General (CAG) that the revenue loss to the state’s exchequer is to the tune of Rs 389.50 crore till last year.

“We are also surprised that there is nothing worth praising on the performances of the PSUs,” he said.

Chyne, who is also a opposition UDP sitting legislator from Sohra, informed that out of 17 PSUs, two none profit making units have been asked to closed down by the state government.

While all the units were running at a loss, he however said the committee found out from the record that there were only three units which were making some net profit.

These include the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC), Forest Development Corporation (FDC) and the Meghalaya Government Construction Corporation Limited (MGCC).

“But the record showing the net profit they are making is only up to the year 2011 as the three units have also failed to submit their arrears and accounts during the past four to five years,” he said.

Stating that the meeting convened today was also to seek the status report on the accounts of the different PSUs, he said the committee has asked all the units to take steps in submitting their accounts.

Meanwhile, the Sohra legislator also regretted the fact that till today, the state government has failed to implement the recommendations made by the Committee in its report submitted in the floor of the House earlier this year.

Asked, he said overstaff is one of the problems that is contributing the poor performances of the PSUs as for instance in the case of the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC), it is having a total of 383 staff with only 64 buses.

He informed that two PSUs that have been closed down include the Meghalaya Electronics Development Corporation Limited (MEDCL) and Meghalaya Bamboo Chips Limited (MBCL).

“The MEDCL which was having only 12 staff, was running a lost of Rs 4 crore,” he added.
