Shillong, Oct 25: Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Anant Kumar Hegde said that the Centre would examine the need to open more Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in the state if proposal comes from the state government.

“Such request has to come from the state government as the Centre usually does not open ITIs on its own,” Hegde told reporters at the sidelines of an inspection to the Shillong ITI here on Wednesday.

The minister also visited the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra in Demseiniong and interacted with students and authorities.

Earlier, the minister informed that the Centre is investing Rs 6,000 crore on a new scheme in association with the World Bank to improve the quality of ITIs across the country.

Over 400 ITIs have been de-affiliated following quality inspections which found that these institutes lack requisite infrastructure and trainers for imparting vocational training to students.
