Shillong, April 23: The Directorate of Civil Defence and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) will conduct a large-scale mock drill in Shillong as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and response mechanisms.
Addressing the media today, Joint Director of Civil Defence and DIG SDRF B. Mukhim, along with Senior Staff Officer Paul Shylla, stated that the exercise is aimed at enhancing coordination among various departments while also raising public awareness on disaster response.
The mock drill will be carried out in two phases.
The first phase will feature simulated emergency scenarios, including search and rescue operations, evacuation procedures, and medical response. Multiple agencies such as the police, health services, civil defence personnel, and other emergency responders will participate to test real-time coordination and efficiency.
In the second phase, a two-minute blackout exercise will be implemented across selected areas. During this period, residents are requested to switch off all lights and electrical illumination as part of the simulation.
Officials noted that the drill is designed to replicate emergency situations and assess preparedness levels across districts. It will also involve close coordination with local authorities, community leaders, and volunteers.
The Directorate has appealed to the public to cooperate fully by adhering to instructions, particularly during the blackout exercise. Residents, shnong leaders, and business establishments have been urged to extend their support to ensure the success of the drill.
Authorities emphasised that such exercises are vital for safeguarding civilian lives and building a robust, well-coordinated disaster response system. They also clarified that the drill is purely a preparedness measure and there is no cause for panic.
