Nongpoh, May 5: The outbreak of Swine Flu in parts of Ri Bhoi district has severely affected pig farmers, with several reports of pig deaths raising concern across the region.

While the exact cause of the spread remains unconfirmed, there is growing suspicion that the unchecked import of pigs without proper health screening may be one of the contributing factors.

Adding to the concern, reports have emerged of irresponsible and illegal dumping of dead pigs, further worsening environmental conditions and posing a serious risk to animal and public health.

According to information gathered from local residents in the Umsning area, particularly from Syad Lyngdoh, unidentified individuals allegedly dumped carcasses of pigs into the Umtrew River, triggering strong reactions from village authorities.

Acting on inputs, shnong leaders conducted an inspection and, based on video evidence, found approximately five to six dead pigs disposed of in the river.

The animals are suspected to have died from disease.

The Umtrew River is widely used by residents for irrigation, washing, and daily household needs, and serves as a vital water source for several villages in the Umsning region, raising fears of contamination and further spread of disease.

Local leaders, including shnong secretary Bah Donbor Marbaniang and treasurer Bah Arbanstone Syiem, have strongly condemned the act, calling it irresponsible and dangerous.

They warned that such actions not only endanger the residents of Syad Lyngdoh but also pose risks to neighbouring villages, especially in terms of potential disease transmission among livestock.

The shnong leaders have urged the government, particularly the Veterinary Department, to take immediate action and investigate the matter to prevent further health and environmental hazards.
