Leaders recall former Meghalaya Chief Minister’s contribution and words of encouragement
Nongpoh, September 12: The first death anniversary of former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr DD Lapang was observed at Ri Bhoi College, Nongpoh, on Saturday, with public representatives, government officials, community leaders, students and members of the public paying tribute to the veteran leader.
The memorial programme was held at the site where a bust of Dr Lapang was installed by the Youngminds Association in 2024.
Among those present were Jirang MLA and Minister Sosthenes Sohtun, Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem, Nongpoh MDC Rona Khymdeit, nominated KHADC MDC Mathew Kenneth Makdoh, Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhishek Saini, Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad and Ri Bhoi College Principal Dr E Kharkongor.
Former colleagues, community leaders and family members, including Dr Lapang’s son BR Blah, were also present. Youngminds Association president Lumnoklang Malai attended the programme along with members of various organisations, students and parents.
As a mark of respect, representatives of different organisations and sections of society offered floral tributes at the bust of Dr Lapang.
Speaking at the programme, leaders recalled Dr Lapang’s contribution not only to his family and the Lapang clan but also to Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya and the wider Northeast.
They described his death as a loss felt across the State, recalling his long public life and role as one of Meghalaya’s prominent political leaders.
Public representatives also shared memories of their interactions with Dr Lapang and recalled the encouragement they received from him despite belonging to different political parties.
One of the qualities highlighted was his approach towards political opponents. Leaders recalled that Dr Lapang discouraged election campaigners from making personal attacks or criticising opponents and instead advised them to explain their own policies, remain firm in their principles and maintain dignity as public representatives.
Speakers said these values continued to hold relevance for political leaders and the younger generation, particularly at a time when public discourse often becomes confrontational.
The programme concluded with renewed tributes to Dr Lapang and reflections on his political legacy and contribution to public life in Meghalaya.
