Shillong, May 14: Leaders of the Hill Farmers’ Union, accompanied by officials from the district administration and the Superintendent of Police of West Jaiñtia Hills, visited Lapangap on Wednesday to assess the prevailing situation and strengthen security arrangements for local farmers engaged in cultivation activities.
The visit follows allegations by farmers from Lapangap that individuals from the Karbi side, allegedly accompanied by personnel from the Assam Police, obstructed them while they were carrying out paddy transplantation and cultivation in their fields near the disputed border area.
According to the farmers, the tense atmosphere and alleged intimidation forced several cultivators to flee the fields out of fear, disrupting ongoing agricultural activities.
Speaking to reporters, Hill Farmers’ Union leader Allfondbirth Kharsyntiew stressed that ensuring the safety and security of farmers is of utmost importance, as agriculture remains the primary source of livelihood for the people of Lapangap.
He said the organisation would not accept any attempt to prevent local farmers from cultivating their own land and urged the government and district authorities to address the matter seriously to prevent further escalation of tension in the area.
Meanwhile, officials from the district administration and police inspected the affected areas and interacted with farmers to review the existing security arrangements. Authorities assured that adequate measures would be taken to ensure cultivation activities continue peacefully and without further disturbance.
