Shillong, July 15: In Garo Hills, the 99th anniversary of the Garo Labour Corps Day was observed on Saturday.
Hundreds of people paid their tribute to those from the Garo community who went to France to assist the British during the First World War. The brave men were recruited as 69th Garo Labour Corps.
People also laid wreaths on the Cenotaph at Babupara besides attending a memorial function organized at the District Auditorium, Tura. The function to pay tribute to the departed souls was organised by the Tura Municipal Board.
Garo Labour Corps Day has been observed every year since 1919 in Garo Hills.
