Shillong, June 10: A massive boulder crashed onto a vehicle along the Laitlyngkot–Lyngkyrdem stretch of the Shillong–Dawki road on Wednesday morning, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. Fortunately, the occupant escaped without sustaining any injuries.

According to reports, the incident occurred at around 11:00 AM near Laitmawiong when a large boulder dislodged from a hillside and landed directly on a vehicle bearing registration number BRO 1KC 3563.

Sources said the area had been experiencing heavy rainfall since the morning. The vehicle was reportedly travelling from the upper reaches of the route, but due to a landslide in the Laitkynsew area, authorities had closed the road. As the driver attempted to turn back, the boulder suddenly came crashing down onto the vehicle.

Initial reports indicate that the accident site is not part of the ongoing road widening and improvement works under the Shillong–Dawki road project. Construction activities are currently concentrated on the Laitkynsew stretch, which has been identified as a landslide-prone zone during the monsoon season.

Following the incident, local authorities and representatives of the construction company visited the site to assess the condition of the road and review safety measures for commuters travelling along the route.

Speaking on the matter, Tes Khongkrom, Assistant Public Relations Officer of Ace Construction, said that scheduled road closure timings would continue to be strictly enforced to facilitate ongoing construction activities and ensure public safety.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks posed by heavy rainfall and unstable hill slopes along key road corridors in Meghalaya during the monsoon season, prompting renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution while travelling through vulnerable stretches.
