Shillong, May 28: Vivanstone G. Kharngapkynta, advocate of the Meghalaya High Court and member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), has expressed gratitude after being selected as the United Democratic Party candidate for the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency bye-election.

Speaking during the candidate announcement programme, Bah Vivanstone said the decision of the party to nominate him was both an honour and a major responsibility. He thanked UDP leaders, workers and supporters for the confidence and trust placed in him.

“I wanted to work for the people after 38 years of working for myself,” he said while addressing party supporters following the announcement of his candidature.

He assured that if elected, he would work tirelessly to raise issues concerning Meghalaya and the people of the Shillong Parliamentary Constituency in Parliament.

According to him, the state requires visionary leadership, balanced development and stronger protection of the rights and interests of the people. He also pledged to become a strong voice for the people in Parliament if given the opportunity.

The UDP officially announced Kharngapkynta as its candidate after a party meeting resolved to contest the bye-election necessitated by the demise of former Shillong MP Ricky Andrew J. Syngkon.

Highlighting key concerns facing the state, Kharngapkynta said Meghalaya continues to grapple with challenges related to employment, development, education and the protection of people’s rights.

He stressed that elections should not merely be seen as political contests between parties, but as opportunities to serve the people and ensure Meghalaya’s concerns are effectively represented in Parliament.

“We must work hard to bring positive change and ensure that the youth, women, and the people receive the opportunities and support they rightfully deserve,” he said.

Kharngapkynta also called on UDP workers and supporters to remain united and work collectively to strengthen the party ahead of the election campaign.
