Shillong, June 10: The Meghalaya unit of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC) on Tuesday held an extended State Executive Meeting at Congress Bhavan in Shillong to review organisational activities and discuss key issues affecting young people across the state.
The meeting was attended by Samrat Jena, the Indian Youth Congress in-charge for Meghalaya, along with Timjim Momin and office-bearers of the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Jena said discussions centred on assessing the organisational strength of the Youth Congress across Meghalaya. District-wise reports were reviewed, and a strategy was formulated to strengthen the organisation over the next three months.
He said the Youth Congress plans to expand its outreach programmes by engaging with students, youth and local communities throughout the state. As part of this effort, the organisation intends to visit colleges, universities and grassroots areas to better understand and highlight issues affecting young people.
Jena expressed concern over challenges facing Meghalaya’s youth, particularly unemployment, limited employment opportunities and educational issues. He said these concerns would remain among the organisation’s primary focus areas in the coming months.
Referring to the recent NEET-related controversy and the death of a student from Meghalaya, Jena criticised what he described as an inadequate response from the authorities. He noted that thousands of students from the state appear for the highly competitive medical entrance examination every year and that any irregularity in the process has serious implications for their future.
He alleged that the concerns raised by affected students and their families had not received adequate attention from the concerned ministry and the Prime Minister. According to Jena, the Youth Congress would continue to stand with students and demand greater accountability and transparency in the examination system.
He further stated that the Congress remains committed not only to electoral politics but also to safeguarding the interests of young people and ensuring accountability. He maintained that the Youth Congress would continue to speak out whenever students and youth face injustice.
Meanwhile, Momin said the Meghalaya Youth Congress has been working to strengthen its connection with young people across the state. He stressed that the organisation would continue serving as a platform for youth voices while engaging regularly with communities at the grassroots level to understand their concerns and aspirations.
The leaders reiterated their commitment to addressing issues affecting students and unemployed youth while continuing efforts to strengthen the organisation’s presence across Meghalaya.
