Shillong, August 1, 2026: Khlieh Asem village in Mawkynrew Block, East Khasi Hills district, is steadily emerging as one of Meghalaya’s finest examples of community-led eco-tourism and environmental conservation. Through the collective efforts of the Dorbar Shnong (Village Council) and local residents, the village has successfully preserved its pristine natural environment while promoting sustainable tourism as a source of livelihood.
One of the village’s main attractions is Pdem Falls, known for its cascading streams flowing over rocky formations, lush green forests and tranquil surroundings. In recent years, the scenic destination has drawn a growing number of visitors from across Meghalaya and other parts of the country, who come to experience its natural beauty, photography opportunities and outdoor recreation.
Speaking to the media, Khlieh Asem Sordar Shnong (Headman) Bah Shyrmen Nongrum said environmental conservation remains the village’s highest priority. He stressed that development should never come at the expense of nature, adding that the community is committed to protecting its forests, water sources and surrounding ecosystem while encouraging responsible tourism.
As part of its conservation efforts, the Dorbar Shnong has prohibited tourist entry every Sunday. According to Bah Nongrum, the weekly closure is intended to reduce plastic pollution, facilitate thorough cleaning of tourist sites and allow the environment time to recover from the steady flow of visitors during the rest of the week.
He said villagers regularly organise cleanliness drives, maintain trekking routes leading to Pdem Falls and educate visitors on proper waste disposal and environmental responsibility. Tourists are also encouraged to respect local customs and traditions while helping preserve the area’s natural beauty.
Bah Nongrum further said the village plans to strengthen its eco-tourism initiatives by creating sustainable livelihood opportunities through homestays, local tour guides, food stalls and other tourism-related enterprises. However, he emphasised that economic development must remain environmentally responsible and should never compromise the village’s ecological balance.
At the same time, he noted that agriculture continues to be the primary source of livelihood for most households in Khlieh Asem. He said the community believes eco-tourism should complement rather than replace traditional farming, ensuring villagers benefit from both sectors while safeguarding natural resources for future generations.
In his concluding remarks, Bah Nongrum appealed to all visitors to act as responsible tourists by respecting local customs, avoiding littering and joining hands with the community to protect Pdem Falls and its surrounding environment. He said such collective efforts will help Khlieh Asem continue serving as a model for sustainable eco-tourism and environmental conservation in Meghalaya.
