Shillong, July 31: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has announced that it will organise a peaceful march to the Meghalaya Secretariat on August 6, 2026, to press the MDA Government to address a range of issues affecting the people of the state.

Addressing the media on Friday, VPP President Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit said the government should not take the proposed march lightly, as it reflects the growing frustration of the people over what the party described as the government’s failure to address pressing public concerns.

Basaiawmoit clarified that the march is intended to be entirely peaceful and should not be misconstrued as an attempt to storm the Secretariat.

“Our intention is not to create any law and order problem. We only want to peacefully demonstrate the frustration and anguish of the people over various issues, including the problems faced by students, teachers and the general public,” he said.

He expressed hope that the state government would treat the march as a reminder to take the concerns raised by the VPP and the people seriously and respond positively to resolve the issues affecting the state.

The VPP President also appealed to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to remain in Shillong on the day of the march so that he could personally witness the public participation and understand what the party described as the widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s functioning.

Calling on people from all walks of life to join the march, Basaiawmoit said a strong public turnout would send a clear message that the government must become more responsible and accountable to the people rather than govern according to its own priorities.

He further warned that the VPP would not tolerate any attempt to sabotage the peaceful programme. The party, he said, would not take responsibility for any individual found creating disturbances during the march, reiterating that the protest would be conducted in a peaceful and democratic manner.
