SHILLONG, April 22: Along with the rest of the country, lawyers of the Shillong Bar Association (SBA) on Friday burnt copies of the “The proposed Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2017” of the Law Commission.
The lawyers around a hundred, assembled outside the Shillong Bar Association premises, were seen burning the copies of the recommendation and the Bill of the Law Commission as a mark protest.
Speaking to reporters, SBA secretary Kishore Ch Gaut said they are demanding for the immediate scrapping of the recommendation made by the Law Commission which is totally against the lawyers.
“If the Bill becomes an Act, the right of the lawyers to go on strike will be taken away. We are also opposing the attempt to include people from other fields to be members of the Bar Council,” he said.
He also added, the provision which allows the client to sue lawyers up to Rs 5 lakh is also unacceptable.
Meanwhile, the secretary informed that the protest was also participated by their fellow lawyers from across the country as per the resolution adopted by the Bar Council of India on April 15.
