Over 6.20 lakh notices delivered and 2.08 lakh hearings completed across the State

Shillong, September 8: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Meghalaya, has extended the schedule for the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls by 14 days following disruptions to the claims, objections and hearing process in Shillong last month.

Under the revised schedule, claims and objections may be filed until September 18, while their disposal and completion of hearings must be concluded by October 17. The final electoral roll will be published on October 21, 2026.

The decision was announced following separate review meetings held by the CEO with district election officials and representatives of recognised national and State political parties on Tuesday.

Of the 21,69,243 electors included in the Draft Electoral Roll, notices have been generated for 6,51,735 people. So far, 6,20,730 notices have been delivered, while 31,005 remain pending.

Election officials have conducted 2,08,870 hearings, accounting for 32.05 per cent of the notices generated. Following scrutiny and the prescribed hearing process, 384 electors have been found ineligible.

The CEO clarified that receiving a notice does not mean a voter’s name will automatically be deleted. No name can be removed without notice, inquiry, examination of documents and a fair opportunity for the elector to be heard.

Among those identified for scrutiny, 2,22,786 electors fall under the “No Mapping” category, while 4,28,949 have mapping discrepancies.

Since publication of the Draft Electoral Roll, the Election Department has received 12,951 applications, including 6,804 Form 6 applications for inclusion, 738 Form 7 applications, 982 Form 8 applications for shifting and 4,427 Form 8 applications for correction.

Political parties have appointed 1,814 Booth Level Agents across Meghalaya—736 by the NPP, 393 by the BJP, 320 by the VPP, 186 by the Congress, 121 by the UDP and 58 by the AITC.

The CEO appealed to electors who receive notices to attend their hearings and submit the required documents. Eligible voters whose names are missing from the Draft Electoral Roll have been advised to submit Form 6, along with the prescribed declaration and supporting documents, by September 18.
