Shillong, May 8: The Meghalaya government on Friday hiked 25 per cent on the maximum retail price for liquor in order to generate surplus revenue,     Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the hike was in order to generate additional excise revenue to meet the unexpected financial burden and expenditures arising out of the COVID-19 situation in the State.

“A hike of 25 per cent on the maximum retail price for liquor has been approved by the government effective from May 8 midnight,” he said.

Sangma anticipated that the increase of price of liquor will generate additional revenue to the tune of Rs 120-130 crore approximately.

Currently for the last financial year of 19-20 the revenue generated has been Rs. 260 crore from Excise apart from VAT on liquor
