Shillong, July 14: Further agitation by qualified linemen is in the offing to pressurize the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to issue appointment letters to all of them who have been selected for the post.
Ending their two-day sit-in protest here on Friday, hundreds of Jugalis resolved to intensify their agitation from July 20, if the MeECL showed no sign to respond to their demand to issue appointment letters to all of them before the validity of the merit list expires on August 2.
The linemen (Jugalis) mostly working on contractual basis in the MeECL, would resort to indefinite strike by not performing their duty.
The agitation is being supported by the Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) Youth Wing.
In a letter submitted to Chief Minister, Mukul Sangma on Thursday, KHNAM Youth Wing President, Thomas Passah sought for his intervention into the delay of the MeECL to appoint all qualified candidates.
Out of 772 who passed the recruitment examination conducted in 2011, only 290 candidates have been issued appointment letters so far.
Though the recruitment was held in 2011, the declaration of the results was delayed by five years. the results were declared in August last year following agitations by the candidates.
As the validity period of the merit list will expire on August 2, the KHNAM Youth Wing urged the chief minister to intervene so that the remaining candidates get their appointment letters.
The KHNAM Youth Wing has also prepared a writ petition to be filed before the Meghalaya High Court to order the MeECL to issue appointment letters to all the remaining qualified candidates without delay.
