Shillong, June 4: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the North Eastern Council (NEC) has been one of the most important platforms for fostering cooperation and driving development across the states of the North East.
Speaking at the 73rd NEC Plenary Meeting in Shillong, Scindia said it was a great honour for him to be part of the gathering that continues to shape the development trajectory of the region.
He recalled that the NEC was established in 1971 with the objective of promoting regional cooperation and accelerating the socio-economic development of the North Eastern states. He said the foresight of the leaders who envisioned the institution has continued to benefit the region over the decades.
Scindia stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the North East has witnessed transformative growth in several sectors, including infrastructure, connectivity, economic development and trade.
He noted that the peace and stability achieved in the region have created new opportunities for faster development, helping the North East emerge as one of the fastest-growing regions in the country.
The Union Minister further said that the Central Government remains committed to investing in and implementing various projects aimed at strengthening connectivity among the North Eastern states, integrating the region more closely with the rest of India, and enhancing links with neighbouring countries.
Expressing confidence in the vision of “Viksit Bharat 2047,” Scindia said that the North East would play a crucial role in India’s journey towards becoming a developed nation. He added that by 2047, the region would emerge as a major hub of economic growth, trade and development in the country.
In his concluding remarks, Scindia thanked the governments, Governors, Chief Ministers and people of all the North Eastern states for their contribution towards sustaining the region’s progress and development.
Describing the NEC as the region’s “economic growth engine,” Scindia emphasized that continued collaboration between the Centre and the North Eastern states would be essential to unlocking the full potential of the region and ensuring inclusive and sustainable development.
