Shillong, April 30: In a shocking yet inspiring incident from Meghalaya’s Ri Bhoi district, a newborn baby allegedly buried alive in the Mawhati area was rescued by a brave school student along with other Good Samaritans, highlighting the power of timely human intervention.
According to reports, the incident came to light when a group of schoolchildren noticed something unusual while passing through the area. On closer inspection, they discovered the newborn buried under loose soil. Acting swiftly, the student and others pulled the infant out and rushed the baby for medical attention.
The newborn was first taken to Mawhati Primary Health Centre and later referred to Civil Hospital, Nongpoh, for advanced treatment. Medical officials stated that the infant was in critical condition initially but is now under close supervision.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Preliminary findings suggest that the baby may have been buried shortly after birth, allegedly by the mother, though the exact motive is yet to be established.
Authorities, including Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police Giri Prasad, have praised the courage and presence of mind shown by the student and local residents. The police have also announced that the brave student will be formally honoured for the life-saving act.
Officials further urged the public to refrain from circulating sensitive videos of the incident on social media and instead report such matters promptly to the authorities.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern across the region, while also serving as a powerful reminder of the impact of community vigilance and compassion in saving lives.
