Nongpoh, April 30: In view of the approaching monsoon season and concerns over the aging structure of the Umiam Dam, which is over 61 years old, the Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Limited (MePGCL), in collaboration with the District Disaster Management Authority, conducted a Pre-Monsoon Mock Drill on Dam Safety in Ri Bhoi district.
The drill began with the sounding of sirens from the dam site as an early warning measure prior to the simulated release of water. Following this, controlled water discharge was carried out to demonstrate emergency preparedness. Authorities highlighted that in the event of an actual emergency, downstream villages such as Umden Arka and nearby areas could be affected.
Emergency response teams, including personnel from disaster management, police, fire services, and medical departments, actively participated in the drill. The exercise simulated rescue operations for injured individuals and those at risk of drowning, ensuring swift coordination among all responding agencies.
Local residents from Umden Arka and surrounding villages also took part in the drill, alongside key officials including Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO of DDMA Balakyntiew Ranee, District Disaster Management Officer Jonathan Mawthoh, officials from Home Guards and Civil Defence, and senior representatives of MePGCL.
Speaking on the occasion, K. Thangkhiew, Director (Generation), MePGCL Shillong, emphasized the importance of such preparedness exercises. He noted that the dam, constructed in 1965 primarily for power generation, has aged significantly, making it crucial to conduct mock drills to prepare the public and authorities for any unforeseen situation, including the unlikely event of structural failure.
The drill aimed to enhance awareness, strengthen coordination among agencies, and ensure that communities remain alert and prepared for emergencies, especially during the monsoon season.
