SHILLONG, OCT 6: Chief Minister and NPP national president Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday dismissed reports that a sizable number of NPP MLAs are keen on joining the BJP, calling them “mere speculations and imaginations.”

Sangma also confirmed that the NPP will hold a meeting of its legislators on Tuesday evening, but said it is a routine affair.

“We as legislators always meet very often where we ensure that we try to clarify issues that are there in terms of governance and if there are any issues that the MLAs have. It is a natural and normal process to have PP meetings, to have discussions with the MLAs, so there is nothing out of the ordinary. But yes, we are having a meeting today and all NPP MLAs will be there,” he said.

On whether he is tense over the latest political developments, the chief minister said, “There are no major concerns or issues. These have been basically imaginations which people have speculated and jump to conclusions trying to imagine different scenarios.”

“Let me put it to rest that these are nothing but speculations and these are nothing but imaginations from certain sections and certain concerns, maybe the media has created and individuals have created. But let me assure the MLAs, the coalition and the public at large that there is no such thought process and there is nothing of concern in this particular matter,” he added.

Asked if the NPP-led MDA government is stable, Sangma asserted, “Absolutely, the MDA-II government is very stable.”

“The NPP on its own has 33 MLAs who are absolutely intact and we also have our coalition partners. The overall composition must have changed between the partners but the strength of the MDA remains the same and the commitment that is there from the different partners remains the same,” he said.

“There have been issues between two coalition partners which are internal matters of the two parties but that has not in any way affected the overall equation or the stability of the MDA-II government,” he added.
