Nurses Week celebration gets underway at Amlarem

Shillong, May 12: The inaugural function commemorating the annual International Nurses Day was held today at Jarain PHC (Community Hall), Amlarem Sub-Division. The programme was organised by the Trained Nurses Association of India, Jaintia Hills Unit.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Shri Stephanson Mukhim graced the function as Chief Guest.
Speaking on the occasion, he emphatically said that to be a nurse by profession is not always easy as one has to deal with the health of many people and patients. He said that the life and health of many who are suffering depended on their hard work and dedication. Thanking all those who are in the profession for their relentless service in the field of healthcare he also wished them the best in life and in spite of the challenges that they may face, dedicate their service to help people with love, kindness, hard work and a smile on their face.
The International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on 12th May each year coinciding with the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. The theme chosen by the International Council of Nurses to commemorate this year’s Nurses Day is ‘Nurses: A voice to lead – Achieving the sustainable Development Goals’.
The keynote Address was delivered by Smti Aiti Mega Kharkongor, Sister Tutor Norman Tunnel Hospital Jowai, who empasised the role that nurses as health care professionals have, to improve the quality of lives on a global scale in conjunction with the Sustainable Development Goals set forth by the United Nations to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
Others who spoke on the occasion include Shri H. Pothmi, MDC War West and Dr. B. Sutnga, M.O. I/c Jarain PHC.
