SHILLONG, APR 28: Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday termed the passing of the Meghalaya Official Languages Ordinance, 2026 a “historic decision” by the NPP-led MDA government, saying it would directly benefit the youth of the state.

“This decision will surely benefit the youth, who are the future generation of the state,” Dhar said, reacting to the Governor’s decision to grant assent to the ordinance which seeks to provide official language status to Khasi and Garo.

The Deputy CM said the move addressed a decades-old public demand.

“This has been a long pending demand of the people of the state and it is only the NPP who dared to fulfill this aspiration of the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo people,” he said.

Dhar credited the National People’s Party for delivering on its commitment.

“I must say that the NPP has proven its action is louder than words and it has proven that it is a party that serves the people and the state,” he said.

The ordinance will be placed before the Assembly for ratification.
