Shillong, Feb 25: An official of the Railway Protection Force was shot dead by a constable at Mawkyrwat, about 76 km from here on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Mukesh C. Tyagi, an assistant commandant of Railway Protection Force, who was sent for election duty.
The Assembly election in Meghalaya will be held on Tuesday.
According to senior police official, the assistant commandant was shot dead by the constable, Arjun Deshwal by using his service AK rifle while they were in their B-6 UID NO. 812 RPF company camp at the mini secretariat, Mawkyrwat. The firing incident took place at around 11.45 am.
South West Khasi Hills superindent of police, H.G. Lyngdoh said that in the scuffle, one constable Joginder Kumar received bullet injury in his arm and was sent to North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, here for further treatment.
Two other officials, inspector, Pradeep Meena and sub-inspector, Om Prakash Yadav were also injured. They received minor injuries.
The accused (Deshwal) was arrested and his rifle has been seized.
A case was registered and investigation is still on.
The body of Tyagi who hailed from Uttar Pradesh will be taken to his home state after post mortem on Monday
Lyngdoh however said that the incident would not disturb the election process.
