Shillong, April 29: In a deeply disturbing yet remarkable incident, a schoolboy in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district is being hailed for his courage after rescuing a newborn baby allegedly buried alive, in what authorities are now investigating.

According to a video that has widely circulated on social media, the boy is seen urgently digging through soil to pull out the infant, who had been covered with earth. The incident reportedly occurred in the Mawhati area, though officials said details are still being verified.

Eyewitnesses present at the scene, including several local women, guided the boy as he carried out the rescue. He was instructed to carefully lift the newborn and immediately clear soil from the baby’s face, nose and mouth to restore breathing.

Acting swiftly, the boy followed the instructions and was able to bring the infant out alive. The newborn was subsequently rushed to a nearby healthcare facility for emergency treatment. The current condition of the child has not yet been officially confirmed.

Police have reached the location and launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, including allegations that the infant may have been buried by its mother. Authorities said efforts are underway to establish the facts and identify those responsible.

The incident has triggered widespread concern and outrage across the state, even as many have praised the schoolboy’s presence of mind and bravery in saving a life under critical circumstances.
