SHILLONG, JUN 12: The much-awaited inauguration of Shillong Medical College is yet to be scheduled as the Meghalaya government continues to wait for confirmation from the Prime Minister’s Office, Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla said on Friday.

Shylla said two earlier attempts to finalise the date had to be dropped due to last-minute changes. “Not yet. We had fixed dates on two occasions earlier, but something came up later and we had to cancel,” he said.

The state, he added, is actively following up. “We are still in touch and waiting for the date from the Prime Minister. I also reminded the Union Health Minister during the ARHI Hospital inauguration that we are awaiting a date and time from the PM,” Shylla told reporters.

“I’m hopeful we will be able to fix and finalise it very soon.”

Shifting focus to Tura Medical College, the Minister said civil work is almost done but faculty recruitment is lagging.

“On the infrastructure side, we are at about 95% completion for the structural work. We have already advertised for faculty recruitment,” he said.

However, applications have been fewer than expected. “Sadly, the response hasn’t been very good. But we remain hopeful we will get the required faculty on board,” Shylla added.
