Speaker’s election: Donkupar vrs Winnerson

Shillong, Mar 7: The opposition Congress has decided to contest the election for the Speaker’s post to be held on March 12.

The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition has projected United Democratic Party’s president Dr Donkupar Roy as the candidate for the Speaker’s election.

After a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party held at the residence of former chief minister, Mukul Sangma here on Wednesday, Congress MLA from Salmanpara was chosen as the candidate for the Speaker’s election.

The ruling coalition has 36 members 19 NPP, 6 UDP, 4 PDF, 2 HSPDP, 2 BJP, 1 NCP, and two Independents – Samuel M Sangma and Lambor Malngiang.

The opposition Congress won 21 seats, but it has only 20 members since Mukul won from both Ampati and Songsak.

However the lone MLA of KHNAM Adelbert Nongrum and another Independent, S.K. Sun are yet to show whom they will support.

Mukul was elected as CLP leader of the party who will also claimed the Leader of Opposition post in Assembly.
