Shillong, Mar 7: Newly-elected legislators of the tenth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly took oath on Wednesday.
Protem Speaker Timothy D. Shira who presided over the proceedings of the House however, did not administer the oath of office and secrecy and members have to read out the oath by themselves.
The tenth Assembly has a number of new faces and young members and only few veterans like UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy who won the Assembly elections from Shella for seventh consecutive time since 1988 and former chief minister, Mukul Sangma who won for the sixth time as MLA of Ampati since 1993.
While Shira is the oldest member of the House, 25-year-old Dasakhiat Lamare from Mawhati constituency is the youngest member.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was also present during the oath reading ceremony.
Mukul who won from Songsak and Ampati read out his oath only once when his turn came for Songsak Assembly seat.
In the elections held to 59 out of 60 Assembly seats, the Congress won 21 seats, the National People’s Party won 19, the United Democratic Party won six seats, the People’s Democratic Front won four, the Hill State Peoples’ Democratic Party and the BJP won two seats each, the NCP ​and Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement won one​ seat each​, and three Independents were victorious.
The election to Williamnagar constituency was countermanded after the death of NCP candidate, Jonathone N. Sangma.
