Nongpoh, August 18, 2026: The burning of vehicle tyres at four separate locations in Ri-Bhoi district on Tuesday night sparked concern among residents, with the motive behind the incidents remaining unclear.

According to information received from commuters, tyres were set ablaze at two locations near the Umiam Dam site, while similar incidents were reported at Mawdiangum in Nongpoh and Umling.

The incidents reportedly took place late in the evening, when most residents had retired for the night after completing their daily activities.

The flames and thick smoke caused alarm and posed a potential hazard to motorists travelling along the affected roads.No injuries, loss of life or other untoward incidents were reported in connection with the incidents.

However, the fact that tyres were burned at multiple locations within the district has raised questions over whether the incidents could have been coordinated.
