Nongpoh, SEPT 12: A three-kilometre road connecting Umkra with Nongsangu, Mawtari and Sonidan in Ri-Bhoi district has been completed in just 12 months, a full year ahead of its stipulated 24-month completion period.

The road was formally inaugurated on September 10 by Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and Public Works Department Minister Prestone Tynsong.

Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, Mawhati MLA Charles Marngar, officials from various government departments, traditional leaders, residents and schoolchildren attended the inaugural programme.

The people of Umkra welcomed the dignitaries and expressed their appreciation for the early completion of the project.

The newly developed road is expected to significantly improve connectivity in the area, particularly for residents of remote villages. It will facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce to markets, improve access to schools and workplaces, and make healthcare and emergency services more accessible.

The improved connectivity is also expected to support local trade, create livelihood opportunities and contribute to the overall economic development of the region.

The completion of the project ahead of schedule highlights the importance of effective planning and coordination between the government, contractor and other stakeholders.
