Shillong, July 11: The Seng Kur Lyndem and Ryndem celebrated its Silver Jubilee (25th anniversary) at the Bharat Scouts and Guides Hall in Shillong on Friday, bringing together clan members for a day of cultural reflection, recognition and discussions on preserving Khasi traditions and identity.

A key highlight of the celebration was a lecture by Ms. Yemame Lyndem, a PhD scholar from the Department of Food & Folklore at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), on the topic “The Khasi People’s Sacred Understanding of Food and Drink.”

In her presentation, Yemame explained that food in Khasi society is far more than a means of sustenance, describing it as an important cultural institution deeply connected to faith, traditional rituals, respect for elders, and the unity of families and communities. She said indigenous Khasi cuisine and the customs of sharing food during ceremonies and community celebrations reflect the richness and depth of Khasi cultural heritage.

She encouraged the younger generation to study, preserve and promote these traditions to ensure that the community’s cultural heritage is passed on to future generations and continues to strengthen Khasi identity.

As part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations, the Seng Kur Lyndem and Ryndem also honoured distinguished members of the clan in recognition of their contributions over the years.

Addressing the gathering, Rangbah Kur Bah Damon Lyndem reiterated the clan’s guiding principle: “Know your clan, preserve its customs and traditions.” He stressed the importance of safeguarding the clan’s cultural heritage and strengthening unity among its members.

The programme also featured a special address by Pastor O. L. Snaitang, who spoke on the theme “Preserving the Clan within the Family.” He emphasised the need to educate younger members about their clan history, lineage and kinship, particularly before marriage, so they understand their roots and uphold Khasi customs.

Pastor Snaitang further urged members of the Lyndem clan to remain committed to preserving the Khasi matrilineal system, stressing that lineage should continue through the mother’s clan while protecting the indigenous traditions and cultural values of the Hynñiewtrep people.
