Protesters Gather Early to Oppose Shree Cement Limestone Mining Project in East Jaintia Hills

Protesters Gather Early to Oppose Shree Cement Limestone Mining Project Khliehriat, July 31: From the early hours of Friday morning, people from several villages gathered in large numbers to oppose the Public Hearing and the proposed limestone mining project of Shree Cement Limited in East JaiƱtia Hills. A heavy deployment of police personnel was seen at several locations to maintain security, while protesters voiced strong opposition to the project. Tension between the police and demonstrators reportedly led to brief moments of confrontation in some areas. Those opposing the project alleged that the State Government was more focused on protecting the interests of the company and was using its authority to ensure that the Public Hearing proceeded. They claimed that the government's actions reflected a preference for safeguarding the interests of an outside company while ignoring the concerns and rights of the indigenous people, despite widespread public opposition. The protesters also said that the voices and sentiments of local residents had long been overlooked. They reiterated their commitment to continue their movement to protect their land, environment, and the rights of the indigenous communities.Khasi Hills
