Workshop on responsible tourism held

Shillong, Feb 18: A one-day workshop on Responsible Tourism was held at the State Convention Centre, Pinewood Hotel on Monday.

Co-hosted by the Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya and Outlook Responsible Tourism, and supported by North Eastern Council, the workshop was inaugurated by Meghalaya Home Minister, James P.K Sangma in the presence of Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner to India, Dr. Shah Mohammad Tanvir Monsur.

Additional Chief Secretary in- charge Tourism, R. V Suchiang, Commissioner & Secretary, Tourism, M. R Synrem, Director Tourism, C.V.D Diengdoh, Editor, Outlook India, Ruben Bannerjee, Government officials, Tour Operators, Hoteliers, Co-operative Societies and students also attended the workshop.

Addressing the inaugural programme, Sangma said that the workshop is integral and important considering the boom in tourism activities in the State in recent years.

Dwelling at length on the harmony shared by the nature with the tribal way of life, the Minister stressed on the need to practice sustainable tourism by all concerned through adoption of responsible tourism to ensure that the ecology and livelihood of the people are both sustained in the long run.

Sangma also hoped that the benefits of the workshop will be reaped by hoteliers, tour operators, co-operative societies and other stakeholders involved in the tourism sector.

The day long workshop featured presentations by experts on topics including ‘A road map for building responsible businesses in Meghalaya’, ‘Cherrapunjee Holiday Resort’, ‘How to use free digital tools to help your business grow’, etc.
