Houses, vehicles of supporters of winning candidate vandalized in Mookaïaw

Shillong, Mar 2: In a poll-related violence, several houses and vehicles were damaged at Mookaïaw village in West Jaiñtia Hills District on Saturday after the results of the elections to the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) were declared.

According to police, suspected supporters of a losing candidate allegedly pelted stones soon after the results of were declared, and the incident has forced the district administration to immediately promulgate Section 144 CrPC which prohibited assembly of group of persons in the affected area.

Around 14 houses and 5 vehicles were vandalized and the houses and vehicles that have been damaged, mostly belonged to the supporters of the winning candidate.

Residents while speaking to reporters informed that the incident took place just after the news spread that the UDP candidate, Winning G Sungoh, who is froom Mootyrshiah vilalge, had won the Mookaiaw seat where he defeated the NPP candidate, Heirtami Suting.

It was alleged that supporters of the NPP candidate were behind the incident.

West Jaiñtia Hills Superintendent of Police, Lakador Syiem said that Section 144 CrPC has been imposed by the district administration and patrolling was being conducted to bring the situation under control in the village.
